Today we’re going to deviate from our normal blog postings calling for reform in the Berks County Democratic Party. We’re departing from our normal routine to commend the actions of one Berks County State Representative and to chastise another for being afraid to allow an open debate.
On Tuesday November 20th Governor Ed Rendell testified during a session of the State House Judiciary Committee on the need for what he deemed some common sense laws guns. He wasn’t asking for a vote of support for the bills at this time. He was simply asking for a vote by the committee to allow the bills to move forward, so they could be debated and voted on by the entire State House.
Rebuking the rhetoric of the NRA, Representative Tom Caltagirone (LD 127) voted to send all but one of the bills to the floor of the House. The other bill he voted to table until some revisions could be made to the bill. Unfortunately a majority of the members of the House Judiciary Committee, including Berks Representative Carl Mantz (LG 187), voted with the NRA and against allowing an open debate on the floor of the State House. The question to ask Carl Mantz and the NRA is: If these laws were so wrong for the people of Pennsylvania, then why are they afraid to engage in open debate and to allow a vote by all the members of the State House?
